Types of Head Injuries
Head injuries include trauma to any part of the head, including the scalp, skull, face, and brain. While the terms head injury and brain injury are often used interchangeably, it is possible to incur an injury to the head, without damage to the brain. For example, a linear skull fracture can occur without injury to the brain.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when trauma causes injury to the brain. Trauma can include a direct blow, penetration of brain tissue, or the action of external forces like velocity or pressure on the brain.
The skull provides a protective cavity for the brain and, as the most prominent feature of the head, gives shape to the head and face. When external forces acting on the body are strong enough, the bony skull itself becomes dangerous to the soft brain tissue that lies within. There are two types of head injuries:
-
Open head wounds result from blows to the head that break the skull, oftentimes sending bone fragments into brain tissue. Open head wounds can be caused by striking the head against a window or steering wheel in a car accident or a gunshot or explosion.
-
Closed head wounds occur when forces like speed, shaking, or pressure act on the brain to tear, break, and twist brain fibers, causing bleeding, swelling, and bruising that can limit oxygen to the brain, resulting in further, often irreparable damage. These conditions are known as—
-
Diffuse Axonal Injury: Non-localized brain injury to nerve axons caused by shearing and rotational forces acting on the brain
-
Hematoma: Bleeding of the brain
- Edema: Swelling in the brain
